System Level View of SETI Net

System Noise Temperature:

T=LNA temp + galactic background + spill over + attenuation loss + cable loss

    LNA temp is 26 K from manufacture (RAS)

    Galactic background - Assume 10 K

    Spill over - Assume 25 K

    Attenuation loss ( between LNA and Line amp of 0.5dB) 5 K

    Filter Insertion loss (0.5 dB)  5K

    Cable Loss following preamp (0.5 dB)  5K

T= 26 + 10 + 25 + 5 + 5 + 5

 T = 76 deg Kelvin

Address Space

The above picture is of the SETI Net address space - the number of possible places for this system to look.

So the address space of SETI Net is:

(BPF/ABW)  *  (RA/HPBW) * (DEC/HPBW) =

Where:

  •  BPF = Band Pass Filter pass band (100 MHz)
  • ABW = Audio Pass Band (20 KHz)
  • RA = Right Ascension ( degrees)
  • HPBW = Half Power Beam Width (about 3 degrees at 1420 MHz)
  • DEC = Declination (degrees) possible with my antenna

(100 E6 / 20 E3) * (360/3) * (62/3) = 12,000,000 channels to surf (I'd better get started hu).

I spend 2,000 seconds on each channel so: ~ 2.4E10 seconds or ~ 3,300 years to look ONCE in all my address space (then I start over).
