Drilling down into the SETI data:

SETI Netis collecting data according to this plan:

  1. Constellations- The sky above SETI Net is marked off into 88 constellations. For convenience I added an 89th called 'Special'
  2. Right Ascension- The constellations are distributed across the sky that is marked off in hours of Right Ascension.
  3. Targets- Most (but not all) constellations contain Target stars. There are about 370 targets. From time to time I will add or subtract a target. The targets were chosen by me as places to point, a way to keep score. When I say I have detected a signal in constellation Virgo at target Spica it only means that I am pointing the antenna at that location not that the signal is actually coming from Spica.
  4. Scans- When I search a particular target its called a scan. A scan has a starting date/time and a starting frequency. When a scan is completed the ending frequency and date/time are added to the scan data. Scans always scan upwards in frequency in jumps of 10 KHz. Each 10 KHz chunk requires about 5 minutes to complete (depending on station setup. At this point the number of scans is small and the search area mostly open - lots of room to scan.
  5. Hit- When the stations software detects a signal during a scan it marks it as a Hit. Select a Scan that shows at least one Hit to see what it contains. If the hit has been determined to not be from ET it is marked as 'falsified'. If a Hit cannot be falsified it is marked as 'Open'.
  6. SETI Data - When a Hit is detected the stations starts collecting data about it. Select a Hit to see the data it contains.
    • Notes - Sometimes I annotate a hit with information about the process of falsification. These 'Hit Notes' are shown next
    • JPG file - The station automatically converts a large search buffer into a JPG image for reference. This can be downloaded by clicking on the file name. The JPGs are very large horizontally and require scrolling to see from one side to the other. They are about 400 pixels high. The file name is encode as Year/Month/Day/Hour/Minute/Second
    • WAV file - The station also collects the raw WAV data directly from the receiver and saves it as well. You may download this data and play it back if you wish. The file name is encode as Year/Month/Day Hour/Minute/Second
    • SML - All the engineering parameters about the station are collected for each SETI Data set. The SML data is also replicated inside each of the JPGs and WAVs for complete identification of the data
